"Indonesia's health ministry says a 16-year-old girl has died of bird flu, bringing toll to 96 in the nation worst hit by the H5N1 virus.

The girl, from the satellite city of Bekasi outside the nation's capital, died while being treated at a Jakarta hospital after first being admitted with bird flu symptoms to a private hospital in her home district on January 4.

Two laboratory tests on the girl had already confirmed she was infected with the virus, making her the 117th person to test positive for the disease in Indonesia, a ministry bird flu centre spokesman said last week.

Two positive results from tests on blood and tissue samples from a victim are needed before Indonesian authorities confirm a bird flu infection.

Humans are typically infected with bird flu by coming into direct contact with infected poultry, but experts fear the H5N1 virus may mutate into a form easily transmissible between humans."
