14-03-2008 - “We recognise the EFA goals will not be achieved globally if they are not achieved in the E-9 countries, noting that some countries may face greater challenges than others in meeting the EFA goals by the 2015 target date.”

Education ministers at the Seventh Ministerial Review Meeting of the Nine High-Population (E-9) Countries (10-12 March, Bali, Indonesia) have recognized the vital role of teachers in improving the quality of education as well as expanded access and equity.

In a 13-point declaration adopted at the conclusion of the conference, the ministers, who represent 60 per cent of the world’s population, stressed the central role of teachers in the attaining the Education for All (EFA) goals, and underlined the importance of South-South co-operation.

The E-9 countries (Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, and Pakistan) represent half the world’s population, but only half the teachers are trained in some countries.
